Fist Pump!

Los Angeles street artist Homo Riot will be having a show at Hold Up Art in downtown. The opening is this Saturday, October 22.

From the press release:
Hold Up Art presents Fist Pump, a collection of new work from Los Angeles-based activist and street artist Homo Riot, whose highly charged and sometimes sexually explicit imagery, became part of the city’s social landscape in response to the 2008 passing of Proposition 8 (a measure on the state ballot that overturned the California Supreme Court's ruling that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry). Homo Riot's message started out as a “fuck you” to the supporters of Prop 8, but has morphed into something larger and more profound. Seen now as an emblem of pride and strength to the gay community, Homo Riot’s work has become a line of communication to young gays who feel they’ve been shunned by mainstream society and a call to action for silenced and closeted gays.
“The work in this show explores the dichotomy between the often hidden and dark realms of gay life and the simultaneous desire for visible exuberance,” says Homo Riot of Fist Pump. “In these pieces, the fusion of these disparate concepts leads to awkward explosions of ‘pride’ and naïve outbursts of youthful anger and rage.”We hope to see you there, and if you can't make it out, please stay tuned for more updates with photos and special information on art and limited editions from the event.

Opening Reception of FIST PUMP on October 22nd, 7pm - 11pm

DTLA Artwalk

Last night the Downtown LA Artwalk was business as usual, with a few good happenings and a parade of police. LAPD flooded the streets in cars, bikes, boots and atop horses. Homo Riot got down in the window of LACDA. Man One reinvented the spray can as we know it at Crewest. Mobile Mural truck buzzed around with the LA VS. WAR murals on it's side. (I later stopped by Vortex Gallery to get a sneak peak at the LA VS. WAR show opening today).

WIN Homo Riot Sticker Pack

The Homo Riot wagon was out today at Akbar's Bars in Space beer bust party in Silver Lake today. The truck is pretty pimp. It's custom patined by Homo Riot. It has a black backgroun with grey stencils of one dude giving another dude a blow job. The stencil is repeated as a background pattern with some words scrawled over it. There's a graphic black and white image over the with a bearded-bear-daddy with Kiss make-up tugging at his undies. Red blood drips below that over another sweet black and white pattern with the words "Homo Riot" stenciled repeatedly.

I scored some sweet gear courtesy of The Site Unscene. I got a tee, a brand new silkscreen vinyl sticker, some black and white stickers and signed photo of one of his street postings. I love this shirt that says "not gay as in happy, but queer as in fuck you".

WIN A STICKER PACK
